The day is exceptionally warm and there is a hint of history around me as I approach Hämeenlinna's magnificent old castle, home to the local museum. For centuries it has been used as a royal fortress and has survived intact to this day. The culture of Hämeenlinna Museum is a fascinating and enchanting sight, a visible monument to an era.
The Eho of the Past Moon in the Chambers of the Castle
I step aside from the present as I walk through the heavy oak doors of the castle. The museum is like a time capsule, inviting me to explore Finnish history and culture. All around me I see objects that tell the story of everyday life and great events: paintings, art objects, historical natural science collections, prehistoric finds and images of life in the past.
The castle was known as the "School Castle" and was used as a military training centre between 1837 and 1979, with many stories to tell. Particularly moving is the story of a young officer's apprentice who was caught reading novels in secret and was therefore punished by having to read the whole book aloud to his comrades.
Sounds of the Past in the Cafe's Twilight
The tour ended with a visit to the museum's quiet café, built in the former castle kitchen. The café, called the 'Café of Memories', is also part of history. The walls of the café are decorated with old photographs, giving a picture of the people and life in Hämeenlinna in the old days. Its thick, old stone walls are a good place to relax with a cup of coffee and perhaps a small treat.
