After arriving at Saimaa in my boat in the morning, I eagerly prepared for the trip. The sun shone from a cloudless sky, and the wind played in my hair. The dolphin-blue water beckoned me. I couldn't wait to explore the Saimaa archipelago.
Boat trip
I jumped in my boat and started the engine. The scenery began to change before my eyes as I moved forward on my back. I had heard that there were many beautiful and peaceful places in the Saimaa archipelago where you could stop to refresh yourself and enjoy nature.
The first stop was on a small island where birds nest. I dropped anchor and walked to the beach. I could hear birdsong all around me and felt instantly forgotten about all the hustle and bustle and stress. I decided to spread my blanket on the beach and rest for a while in the sun. I took off my shoes and dipped my toes in the cool water. I also threw a fishing rod into the water and soon caught a few small fish. With a barbecue and lunch on the boat, I enjoyed a delicious lunch accompanied by birdsong.
The next stop was on a historic island where an old ironworks was located. Saimaa has played an important role in different stages of Finnish history, and I wanted to get to know this past. I toured the stone cave and listened to the guide tell stories about the history of the place. I imagined what it would have looked like centuries ago, when the foundry was in full operation. I imagined hearing the sounds of hammers being hammered and seeing people hard at work.
